Seminar by Bénédicte Ménez (IPGP) – “Carbon Transformations at Rock–Fluid Interfaces: From Mid-Ocean Ridges to Subduction Zones”

Carbon is continuously redistributed within the oceanic lithosphere through rock–fluid interactions, from hydrothermal alteration at mid-ocean ridges to metamorphic processes in subduction zones. This seminar will explore how these interactions control carbon speciation, mobilization and sequestration, with particular attention to ultramafic systems and serpentinization. Drawing on examples from oceanic and subduction environments, I will discuss the interplay between mineral reactions, fluids and organic compounds, and how these processes influence the transfer of carbon from the oceanic lithosphere into the deep Earth.
