Offer Post-doc researcher – “Estuarine biogeochemical modeling for hypoxia remediation”

Located in a region renowned for its quality of life, the University of Angers, the third largest employer in the area, offers an environment conducive to the well-being of its staff and students. As a member of the Angers-Le Mans University Community (COMUE), UA is a multidisciplinary university with a health sector, hosting more than 25,000 students on 3 campuses in Angers (Belle-Beille, Saint-Serge, and Santé) and 2 decentralized campuses (in Cholet and Saumur). It comprises 8 components (4 faculties, 1 IUT, 2 internal engineering schools, and 1 IAE) and 31 research federative units and structures.

The Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géosciences (UMR 6112) is a research unit supported by the Universities of Angers, Nantes and Le Mans and the CNRS. It is a multi-site unit developing research in a wide range of fields within the geosciences. The UMR is structured around research themes and the post-doctoral contract is part of the “Coastal and Marine Systems” theme. This theme addresses issues of natural and anthropogenic variability in coastal and marine environments. Within this framework, there are numerous interactions with government agencies and local authorities responsible for environmental and biodiversity management.

Missions and activities
The European Union and the Pays de la Loire region have commissioned the LPG to study hypoxia in the Loire estuary and the potential role of the benthic compartment of the estuary in triggering or maintaining these summer periods of low oxygen. The aim is to complete a study begun in 2020 (which has led to the completion of 2 doctoral theses and a 12-month post-doctorat fellowship), with the aim of developing management scenarios to reduce the impact of these hypoxic periods, which have a major environmental impact.

Relying on the national network of researchers involved in the various ongoing projects on the Loire, and mainly through the implementation of biogeochemical models, the post-doctoral researcher recruited will be expected to :
1. improve, in time and space, the significance of the results obtained by the 2 PhD theses;
2. identify the forcing factors that managers can influence;
3. predict short-term hypoxia trends;
4. produce a scientific report for stakeholders;
5. organize a training and exchange day for institutional and non-institutional partners.

Characteristics of the contract
Start date of the position: April 2024
Duration of contract: 18-or 24 months
Workload: full-time
Gross monthly salary: ~2,600€ (depending on experience and profile)
Place of work: Angers and Nantes
