Recherche en calcul scientifique, en particulier dans le domaine du traitement des images satellite appliqué à l'étude de la Terre et des planètes du Système Solaire:

1- Etude par imagerie hyperspectrale des surfaces de Mars et de Titan :

   Depuis novembre 2003, je travaille au laboratoire de Planétologie et Géodynamique de Nantes sur les imageurs hyperspectraux OMEGA, VIMS à bord des sondes Mars Express, Cassini/Huygens. Le but de ces instruments est d'obtenir des informations sur la composition des surfaces de Mars, de Titan (satellite de Saturne) à partir d'images hyperspectrales dans le visible et le proche infrarouge. Ce travail se fait notamment grâce au développement de codes de calculs sous IDL/ENVI, réalisant les principales étapes du traitement (étalonnage radiométrique et géométrique des images brutes, réalisation de mosaïques, combinaison des longueurs d'ondes à partir d'algorithmes originaux permettant ensuite d'extraire l'information sur la composition des matériaux présents à la surface des planètes).

Etude de Titan :

    Nous travaillons au laboratoire sur la caméra infrarouge VIMS qui se trouve à bord de la sonde CASSINI, arrivée en orbite de Saturne en Juillet 2004. Le travail consiste à programmer certaines observations (notamment des survols de Titan, le plus gros satellite de Saturne, entouré d'une épaisse atmosphère d'azote et de méthane) et ensuite à analyser les données reçues. Il s'agit notamment de tirer partie de la capacité de l'instrument VIMS à observer simultanément dans 352 longueurs d'onde du visible au proche infrarouge pour percer l'atmosphère opaque et ainsi pouvoir cartographier les structures composant la surface de Titan.

L'analyse des données infrarouge peut être couplée à l'étude des données acquises en mode SAR par le Radar de la sonde CASSINI. Alors que l'infrarouge est principalement sensible à la composition et à la taille des grains, le radar, travaillant en bande Ku, est quant à lui principalement sensible aux variations de rugosité (et dans une moindre mesure aux variations de la constante diélectrique). En outre, la profondeur de pénétration de l'onde radar est de plusieurs dizaines de centimètres, alors que l'infrarouge ne pénètre pas plus que quelques dizaines de micromètres de la surface. Les deux jeux de données sont donc très complémentaires. Nous travaillons sur l'intégration de ces différents jeux de données infrarouge et Radar. La figure ci-dessous montre un exemple d'application sur un cratère d'impact (Sinlap):

Etude de la planète Mars :

    Je travaille sur l'analyse des images de l'imageur hyperspectral OMEGA à bord de la sonde Mars Express, arrivée en orbite autour de Mars en Décembre 2003. Au laboratoire de Nantes, nous avons focalisé nos efforts sur la mise en évidence de dépôts d'oxydes de fer et de sulfates (dans les canyons de Valles Marineris par exemple), ainsi que sur le développement d'une méthode de déconvolution des spectres par moindres carrés. Le but est d'obtenir des cartes de répartition des principaux minéraux à la surface de Mars.

La planète Mars vue par le spectro-imageur OMEGA (exemple de cartes globales obtenues à l'issue d'une analyse par mélanges linéaires, appliquée à l'ensemble du jeu de données). Dans l'image du bas, le clinopyroxène apparaît en bleu, l'orthopyroxène en vert et l'olivine en rouge (d'après Le Mouélic et al., LPSC 2009) Mars_OMEGA_br

 

Ces études sont effectuées depuis l'orbite par les sondes Mars Express et Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Depuis Août 2012, nous avons également la possibilité d'effectuer des études locales grâce au rover Curiosity, équipé de la caméra ChemCam développée par l'IRAP à Toulouse en collaboration avec le LANL à Los Alamos. Je m'intéresse principalement à la capacité d'imagerie de ChemCam. L'instrument de seconde génération SuperCam à bord du rover Perseverance permet, depuis février 2021, d'acquérir des spectres infrarouges directement sur place, ce qui vient compléter les analyses orbitales
