By intercepting Particulate Matter (PMs), the canopy can modulate both the fluxes of particles toward the soil and their fate within ecosystems. However, this leaf deposition does not necessarily constitute a simple reservoir: leaf surfaces are reactive interfaces capable of retaining and transforming PMs and, in the case of the finest particles, absorbing them through their leaves, potentially leading to leaf-rhizosphere transfer and mineral transformation. During this seminar, we will examine the physiological and physicochemical parameters that can modulate these processes.<\/p>\n<p>I propose to present several examples of ongoing research to discuss the role of leaf interception on PM flux, using the example of arsenic deposition on garigue plants in a contaminated environment. I will illustrate whether and under what conditions this leaf deposition could enable the development of strategies inspired by nature to monitor air contamination, such as the use of epiphytic plants as bioaccumulators.<\/p>\n<p>I will also discuss the mechanisms that may control the foliar uptake of particles via different pathways (cuticle, stomata, trichomes). In particular, we will examine the physicochemical properties of mineral (nano)phases, along the physiological parameters of leaves that modulate these uptake pathways, using model copper-based nanoparticles and tomato genotypes. The flux and cycle of elements contained in PMs are primarily characterized using \u00b5-XRF elemental mapping and \u00b5-XANES speciation analysis. The study of these systems has enabled us to propose various strategies that could help reduce copper contamination in agricultural soils through soil coverage, and\/or Cu formulation that could release ionic Cu on biological trigger.<\/p>\n<p>These studies open up new avenues for better understanding the role of vegetation in contaminant cycles and for more accurately predicting the environmental fate of ultrafine particles, whether they are of natural or anthropogenic origin or associated with new agrochemical formulations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plant canopy constitutes a major reactive interface between the atmosphere and terrestrial compartments.
